Course Summary
The intention of this course is to help native speakers and ESOL learners who have successfully completed the E3 Functional Skills qualifications (in the past year) but are not yet ready to join an English Functional Skills course at Level 1, to build confidence and knowledge to a proficient level. To join this course, you must sit an Initial Assessment so you can study at the right level. On this course, you will work to build on the skills you acquired paying special attention to improving writing and reading skills. By the end of this course, you will have improved your spelling, grammar and punctuation to write longer texts such as articles and reports which meet the assessment criteria at Functional Skills Level 1. You will be able to read texts that are more complex, infer meaning using organisational features and other strategies to extract information and details. You will be able to apply the skills you learn in the workplace and in other real-life situations as well as to prepare for a Functional Skills course. Attending this course will also give you the opportunity to meet other people and improve your self-confidence which is beneficial for good mental wellbeing.

• you must also complete an Initial Assessment
• smart phone, tablet, iPad or access to a computer for online learning

You will gain a Brent certificate of attendance in Part 1 if you submit a portfolio and have 90% attendance. In Part 2, you will gain two Ascentis certificates in Level 1 Grammar & Punctuation and Spelling; in Part 3, you will gain an Ascentis Reading certificate at Level 1. Prosp User 4
Your teaching and learning will include:
• 1 lesson each week for 2.5 hours at a Brent Start centre
• additional 2 hours on-line learning (non-teaching)
• independent learning and self-assessment (at least 4 hours per week)
• assessment in class and practice test to help prepare you for exams

Your progress will be checked by:
• developing an individual learning plan for you following Diagnostic Assessment
• marking homework and giving you constructive feedback
• giving you practice papers and mock exams
• meeting with you three times a term to check on progress and set targets
• preparation of portfolio in Term 1 which will evidence achievement of targets
