Course Summary
The intention of this course is to help you build on previous knowledge and gain a qualification in Functional Skills English. You must be a native English speaker to join this course or an ESOL learner who has as successfully completed the Functional Skills Level 1 programme and be ready to commit to 4 hours independent study weekly. On this Level 2 course, you will develop your speaking, listening, reading and writing skills which will enable you to progress to a GCSE or vocational course. This course is designed to help you improve your Speak and Listen skills to identify relevant information and arguments in presentations and discussions, respond appropriately to detailed questions, communicate your ideas and use supporting evidence to give opinions clearly and logically. You will read to understand main points, details and specialist words, analyse texts of varying complexities, recognise language and textual features and use reference materials, organisational and structural features to locate information. You will write a range of texts using complex sentences to create blogs, reports and articles, use a range of punctuation, correct grammar and spelling at Level 2 to convey meaning clearly and coherently with appropriate detail and length to suit the purpose and audience. You will be able to apply the skills you learn in the workplace and in other real-life situations. Attending this course will also give you the opportunity to meet other people and improve your self-confidence which is beneficial for good mental wellbeing.

On this Level 2 course, you will develop your speaking, listening, reading and writing skills which will enable you to progress to a GCSE or vocational course. This course is designed to help you improve your Speak and Listen skills to identify relevant information and arguments in presentations and discussions, respond appropriately to detailed questions, communicate your ideas and use supporting evidence to give opinions clearly and logically.
On successful completion, in Term 1, you will receive a Brent Start Certificate of Completion (dependent on you attaining 90% attendance on the course and submit a portfolio of work). In Term 2, you will receive an Ascentis certificate in Reading and in Term 3 you will receive a Functional Skills certificate at Level 2 (must pass all three exams to gain the qualification).

Your teaching and learning will include:
• 2 lessons each week for 4 hours at a Brent Start centre
• 2 hours on-line learning
• independent learning and self-assessment (at least 4 hours per week)
• assessment in class and practice test to help prepare you for exams

Your progress will be checked by:
• developing an individual learning plan for you following Diagnostic Assessment
• marking homework and giving you constructive feedback
• giving you practice papers and mock exams
• meeting with you three times a term to check on progress and set targets
• preparation of portfolio in Term 1 which will evidence achievement of targets
